     INDUSTRY ADVISORY COUNCIL

The objective of JABEE is to contribute to the development of industry and society by promoting improved engineering education and by fostering internationally recognized engineers.  To achieve this objective, JABEE conducts activities aimed at the accreditation of engineering education programs at Japanese institutions of higher education under the criteria substantially equivalent to Washington Accord Signatories.

At present, 90 engineering societies are regular members of JABEE.  In addition, JABEE has 55 supporting members - corporations or industrial organizations that agree with the objectives of JABEE and provide financial support to JABEE through the payment of annual membership fees.

The INDUSTRY ADVISORY COUNCIL (hereafter referred to as the Council) consists of representatives of supporting members from different sectors of industry, thus ensuring that the viewpoints of all sectors are reflected in engineering education.  The Council provides advice to the President of JABEE from an industrial perspective on issues relating to engineering education and JABEE's accreditation activities.  The Council members 2002 comprise 10 leaders of industry.

The main comments the Council has made to JABEE are as follows.

The Council welcomes JABEE to have gained acceptance as a provisional member of Washington Accord. International cooperation with WA signatories, as well as with other Asian countries, is quite important.

Of the many strategies to promote industry development in Japan through technological innovation, the education of young people is the most important task for the future of society.  This is the key role of JABEE.

There are currently more than 1,000 engineering education programs in Japan. In order to meet the needs of industry, a large proportion of these programs should be accredited.  More institutions of higher education are requested to get the accreditation by JABEE, and JABEE needs to quickly train experienced examiners, including people with industrial backgrounds, in order to meet this demand.

JABEE is not yet widely known in industry circles.  There are still only 55 supporting members, which are not
